The ThinkBack program has been created out
of a partnership between the Dr.
Paul Schwann Applied Health and Research Centre (DPSC) and Farm
Credit Canada (FCC). The program has been operating for three
years in an effort to promote back health and prevent future back
injuries for farmers. It is known that 80% of the general population
will experience back pain at some point in their lifetime (Frank et
al., 1996). Individuals who work in the farm industry have an increased
risk of back injury because of the factors they are exposed to in
their work environment. A survey completed as part of the project
in 2001 and 2002 found that the most commonly reported mechanisms
of back injury were heavy lifting and awkward postures. The results
of this survey have been used in the development of this site to specifically
address these farm work related issues.
